Restoration of the Fountain

August - September, 2004

Funded by a Missouri River Historical Development (MRHD) Grant

The L&L Builders crew lifts the marble fountain basin following removal of the cherub

Red Hat Society members stop by for a look as old, crumbling concrete is chipped away

It has to get worse before getting better!

Foulk Bros. Plumbing lays in new water pipe & controls and Thompson Electric provides the juice to make it work

Muriatic acid works on the marble pedestal while concrete forms are installed

Finishing the concrete is backbreaking work .....

..... but shared by many of the L&L workers

Then it goes "under wraps" for several days to cure while the surrounding area is swept up and resodded

The forms are gone, the marble basin is replaced, and the cherub, in his freshly gleaming bronze, struts his stuff

Craig Arnett, who sandblasted years of calcium from our little friend, is proud of his part in the restoration project
The fountain was formally re-dedicated on May 7, 2005, with MRHD and city dignitaries joining the Friends of Latham Park for the ceremony
